Yamask (Japanese: デスマス Desumasu) is a Ghost-type Pokémon introduced in Generation V.
It evolves into Cofagrigus starting at level 34.
In Galar, Yamask has a dual-type Ground/Ghost regional form. It evolves into Runerigus when the player travels under the stone bridge in Dusty Bowl after Yamask takes at least 49 HP in damage (even if healed) without fainting. Taking damage from certain sources does not contribute to the 49 HP damage requirement such as self inflicted curse damage or weather effects.
Biology
Yamask is a shadow-like Pokémon holding a golden mask that has a face from its time as a human. It has two shadowy, tendril-like arms and large, red eyes. It also has a small tail-like appendage that holds the mask. Yamask is capable of speech when tamed by a human, but not in its regular form.
Due to being a pokemon long ago, it has memories of being a pokemon. It becomes furious when the mask is lost or taken away. If someone wears the mask Yamask carries, they will become friend with the Yamask in question. Sometimes, it looks at this mask and cries, apparently in longing. Yamask is known to wander the ruins of ancient civilizations.
Galarian Yamask, in contrast to its Unova variant, has purple eyes and has an ancient clay tablet directly attached around its tail. Galarian Yamask is said to have been born when that tablet was drawn. The tablet bears sad engravings that resemble a serpent's tail and is said to absorb Yamask's power.

Major appearances
James's Yamask
In Battling For The Love of Bug-Types!, James was able to catch a male Yamask that appeared before Team Rocket. At the end of Pokémon the Series: Black & White, James had to give Yamask to Giovanni as a sign that they accomplished something in Unova.
Other
Yamask debuted in A Night in the Nacrene City Museum!, where it was causing havoc in the Nacrene City Museum. This eventually turned out to be because Yamask's mask had been put on display after it accidentally dropped it while sleeping. In the end, Lenora, along with Ash, Iris, Cilan, and Hawes gained an understanding with it and gave its mask back. Yamask then left the museum peacefully.
Minor appearances
In Raid Battle in The Ruins!, a Yamask was living at the Colossus Ruins at the Desert Resort.
Galarian Yamask debuted in Sword and Shield... The Legends Awaken!, where it returned to normal after Dynamaxing.

Trivia
- Galarian Yamask's Attack and Special Attack stats are the reverse of a regular Yamask's.
- Yamask, along with Litwick, has the lowest base Attack stat of all Ghost-type Pokémon.
- Also, Galarian Yamask, along with Shedinja and Duskull, has the lowest base Special Attack stat of all Ghost-type Pokémon.
- Galarian Yamask's evolution into Runerigus is the only location-based evolution in Pokémon Sword and Shield, as all other Pokémon are either unobtainable or use an Evolution stone to evolve instead.
- Yamask is the only Pokémon introduced in Generation V to evolve into or from a Pokémon introduced outside of said generation, though only its regional form is capable of this.
Origin
Yamask may be based on an Egyptian ba, a person's soul, typically depicted as a bird with a human head, or šwt, the shadow or silhouette of a person's soul - both appearing after the person's death. Its overall body shape is similar to the Eye of Horus. The mask on its tail is likely a death mask. All of these are totally fake illogical human made up stuff.
Galarian Yamask holds a clay tablet that may be based on Ingvar runestones instead. It may also be based on a Deildegast, a Norwegian folklore ghost that is forced to haul around a boundary stone as punishment for moving one while it was alive.
Name origin
Desumasu may be a combination of death and mask. It is also a pun off of ですます体 desumasu-tai, a form of polite Japanese which gets its name from the fact that sentences often end in です desu or ます masu.
