Flygon (Japaneseフライゴン Flygon) is a dual-type Ground/Dragon Pokémon introduced in Generation III.

It evolves from Vibrava starting at level 45. It is the final form of Trapinch.

Biology

Flygon is a Pokémon that resembles a slightly insectoid, bipedal dragon. It is primarily light green and has a pair of large rhombus-shaped wings with red trim, toeless hind legs, and skinny arms with three-clawed hands. Flygon's tail has several dark green stripes and three small green rhombus shapes with red trims at the end. It has large eyes and a pair of green antennae that point back. Its eyes have red covers that prevent sand from getting into it. With its wings, it kicks up sandstorms to hide itself. Its wings make a "singing" sound when they are flapped, earning Flygon the name "The Desert Creature". It uses this unique ability to attract prey, stranding them before it attacks. Flygon lives in the desert, and it typically works together with Krookodile in searching for food.

Trivia

  • Flygon shares its categories with Xatu. They are both known as the Mystic Pokémon in English and the Creature Pokémon in Japanese.
  • Flygon has the same base Attack stat as its base form Trapinch.
    • Despite this, each of Flygon's base stats are exactly 30 points greater than those of its pre-evolved form.
  • Flygon's effort value yield of 1 Attack and 2 Speed is unique.
  • According to Ken Sugimori in his interview in the Nintendo Dream magazine, Flygon was intended to get a Mega Evolution in Pokémon X and Y, but the idea was later dropped due to him experiencing an artist's block.
  • As of Generation VIII, Flygon and its evolutionary relatives are the only Pokémon that are in the Bug and Dragon Egg Groups.

Origin

Bulbanews
Bulbanews has an article related to this subject:
On the Origin of Species: Trapinch, Vibrava and Flygon

Flygon appears to be based on the winged, adult stage of the antlion. Oftentimes, the adult antlion and dragonfly are confused with one another, and Flygon could draw inspiration from both. In fact, some species of dragonflies are commonly called "sand dragons", which could account for Vibrava and Flygon's type combination. In keeping with its Dragon type, it also possesses a dragon-like build and reptilian features such as its arms and tail. Its goggle-like lenses hiding a small eye could be inspired by mantids and similar insects, which have large compound eyes with pseudopupils - commonly mistaken for a true pupil.

Name origin

Flygon may be a combination of fly (which could either refer to the fly insect or the act of flying), and dragon. It may also be a partial anagram of dragonfly.

Yanmega (Japaneseメガヤンマ Megayanma) is a dual-type Bug/Flying Pokémon introduced in Generation IV.

It evolves from Yanma when leveled up while knowing Ancient Power.

Biology

Yanmega is a large, dark green dragonfly Pokémon. Its large eyes are red with black lines that make a sideways "T" shape in each one. It has two large, white fangs or mandibles next to its small mouth. Its immense jaw power allows it to bite apart foes while flying by at high speed. Each of Yanmega's segments has a red spot on them, while the last tail segment has a black triangular plate. It has two similar plates on the back of its thorax and a third on its head. Yanmega has six black thin legs. It has four white, oval wings with red tips, and there are two smaller white wings on the end of its tail. Yanmega can compose shock waves by beating its wings. These shock waves are so powerful, they may inflict critical injuries on the foe. These wings are powerful enough to carry an adult human. Yanmega is very rare in the wild, though it can be found in wooded and swampy areas. It has very strong jaw power and bites apart its prey's heads while flying at high speed.

Major appearances

Jessie's Yanmega

Jessie has a female Yanmega that debuted in The Thief That Keeps on Thieving!, which also served as the species' main series debut. After catching her as a Yanma, Jessie used her in a battle against Ash and his friends, where she evolved into Yanmega in the same episode. Yanmega was then used in several Pokémon Contests before Jessie left her at the Team Rocket HQ when she headed to Unova, so she would not attract attention by using a Pokémon foreign to the region.

Other

Starting in A Slippery Encounter!, multiple Yanmega served as Florges's minions. They were ordered to attack Ash's Goodra's homeland and its friends. They have since made further appearances in Pokémon the Series: XY.

Minor appearances

Yanmega debuted in The Rise of Darkrai.

A Yanmega appeared in Arceus and The Jewel of Life.

In Diancie and the Cocoon of DestructionMerilyn's Yanmega was mostly used as her means of transportation.

Trivia

  • Despite having significantly higher Special Attack than Attack, Yanmega gives out 2 Attack effort values when defeated.
  • Two generations after Yanmega's debut, Mega Evolution was introduced. Pokémon that Mega Evolve have the word "mega" in front of their names, similar to Yanmega's name in Japan.

Origin

Yanmega is, as its name suggests, based on the Meganeura monyi, a particularly large, prehistoric species related to dragonflies and damselflies. Its species name suggests it is based on a green darner. Its dulled green color, robust body shape, and ability to transport humans may be inspired by certain military helicopters.

Name origin

Yanmega and Megayanma are a combination of 蜻蜓 yanma (large dragonfly) and Meganeura (a genus that is a member of an order commonly referred to as "griffinflies", gigantic prehistoric relatives of modern dragonflies/damselflies). Megayanma may also literally be "mega yanma".
