Seviper (Japaneseハブネーク Habunake) is a Poison-type Pokémon introduced in Generation III.

It is not known to evolve into or from any other Pokémon.

It is well known for its ongoing feud against Zangoose.

Biology

Seviper is a serpentine Pokémon that is usually depicted scrunched up like an accordion. It is mostly black in color but has several markings on its body. It has yellow hexagon markings that run from its head to its tail, small yellow bumps where it touches the ground, and various purple scar-like marks. It has elongated red fangs that protrude from its upper jaw and fierce red eyes. Its tail is partially red and has a blade-like shape. Seviper sharpens its tail on rocks and can use it for its former signature movePoison Tail.

Seviper wraps around its opponents to make them unable to move. Its tail and fangs are venomous and are used for striking and poisoning prey or enemies. It has been bitter enemies with Zangoose for many generations. It lives in grasslands and savannas. Serviper preys on Octillery.

Major appearances

Jessie's Seviper

Seviper debuted in A Tail with a Twist, where Jessie caught it. It became Jessie's main battling partner, replacing her Arbok. Jessie eventually left Seviper at Team Rocket Headquarters when she headed to the Unova region so they wouldn't attract attention by using non-Unovan Pokémon.

In Trying to Trounce Torchic, a wild Seviper attacked Ruby and Sapphire after the latter took him to her Secret Base. Her TorchicChic, was able to put it down for the time being with its Ember barrage, but it rose back up after Sapphire fainted from an earlier wound. Ruby, seeing that there was no one around to see him fight, knocked it out cold with his last resort Pokémon before leaving Sapphire a letter and a change of clothes.

Another wild Seviper appeared in On the Loose and Hyper with Zangoose and Seviper I and On the Loose and Hyper with Zangoose and Seviper II where it broke Ruby's Poké Balls in unison with a wild Zangoose. The then-uncaptured Feefee was able to take them both out, resulting in it being forced into his team (which provided a sharp contrast between the well-groomed Nana and Kiki, and Mumu and itself).

As in the gamesLucy uses a Seviper as her main Pokémon, which was able to defeat two rental Pokémon in an exhibition match, and later fought Emerald before losing. She first appeared in Swanky Showdown with Swalot.

A Seviper caught by Crystal and lent to Emerald for his Battle Pike challenge appeared in a fantasy in Moving Past Milotic.

Team Plasma Grunt's Seviper was seen in PS547.

Trivia

  • In an infamous Pokémon Trainer's Choice, Seviper was incorrectly claimed to be an evolved form of Arbok.
  • Seviper and its rival Zangoose share several characteristics, such as being in the Field Egg Group, residing in the same Friend Area, and being the only two Pokémon with a base stat total of 458.
    • Seviper and Zangoose also have the exact opposite Experience group, with Seviper being in the Fluctuating group and Zangoose being in the Erratic group.
  • Seviper is the only pure Poison type to not have an evolutionary relative.

Origin

Seviper is based on a viper; specifically, the habu, a type of venomous snake that was often pitted against mongooses in roadside shows. This practice is now considered inhumane and is rarely seen today. Aside from its scars, the shape of its color pattern resembles that of the elegant pitviper. The rivalry it shares with Zangoose is based on the relationship between mongooses and snakes.

Name origin

Seviper is a combination of sever (to cut and detach) or severe (intense) and viper.

Habunake is a combination of 波布 habu and snake.

Scolipede (Japaneseペンドラー Pendror) is a dual-type Bug/Poison Pokémon introduced in Generation V.

It evolves from Whirlipede starting at level 30. It is the final form of Venipede.

Biology

Scolipede is a centipede-like Pokémon that usually stands with the front half of its body raised vertically off the ground. Its segmented body is dark magenta, except for its smooth, dark gray underside. Long, slightly bent horns similar to antennae extend from its head, as well as an identical pair of horns on its rear. Purple bands decorate these horns, and teardrop-shaped rings of the same color mark each body segment, one on each side of its body. It possesses four pairs of short, purple fore-claws on the body segments that make up its neck, which is used to inject poison. The four hind legs are longer, thicker, and spaced farther apart. Each hind limb has curved dark gray bands around the middle.

Scolipede lives in lush forests. It is very aggressive and will not give up until victorious. This Pokémon chases down enemies with great speed and then attacks relentlessly with its horns until it prevails. It latches onto the prey with the claw's toxic spikes and then slams it into the ground for the deadly poison effect. Centiskorch is the natural predator or prey of Scolipede, depending on who wins the territorial fight.

Trivia

  • Scolipede represents November in the Unova horoscope.
  • Despite the Scolipede and Centiskorch evolutionary families living in different parts of the Galar region, both Venipede and Scolipede's Pokédex entries speak of their hostile relationship with the latter family.

Origin

Bulbanews
Bulbanews has an article related to this subject:
On the Origin of Species: Venipede, Whirlipede and Scolipede

Scolipede's species shows that it was inspired by the centipede, most likely the Scolopendra gigantea, while its horns resemble that of Scolopendra cingulata. It could also be based on Arthropleura, a prehistoric relative of centipedes that grew to two-and-a-half meters. Additionally, Scolipede has a little in common with millipedes, and may also draw inspiration from a red Archispirostreptus gigas, a species of millipede often kept as a pet.

Name origin

Scolipede is a combination of Scolopendra (genus of centipedes) and centipede or millipedeSkolo- is an Ancient Greek principle part meaning "pointed" or "impaling".

Pendror is derived from Scolopendra.
