Grovyle (Japaneseジュプトル Juptile) is a Grass-type Pokémon introduced in Generation III.

It evolves from Treecko starting at level 16 and evolves into Sceptile starting at level 36.

Biology

Grovyle is a bipedal Pokémon similar in appearance to a theropod dinosaur. It is primarily green with a red underside. There is a belt-like green stripe across its belly. Grovyle's hands have two clawed fingers and powerful legs with birdlike feet. Its well-developed muscles make it an expert climber and allow it to leap quickly from branch to branch. Grovyle has three long leaves on its wrists, a large leaf on top of its head, and two tails that have a leafy appearance. This leafy appearance allows it to be camouflaged in the forests where it lives. These leaves are also used in its former signature moveLeaf Blade.

The Treecko meant to be handed to Emerald was recovered by Wally and became a Grovyle in Dreadful Dealing with Dusclops to rescue his temporary owner when a wild Dusclops threatened to suck them into its infinite cavity. After a few more weeks of training at the Sky Pillar under Norman, he was able to awaken the ancient legendary Pokémon Rayquaza, but the huge gust of wind sent him flying miles away into a distant island where he evolved again to a Sceptile and was this time caught by Guile Hideout, who smuggled him into the Battle Factory to try to drive the nosy press away. He ended up being stolen by his legitimate owner, Emerald, and became a fixed member of his team.

Emerald had borrowed a Grovyle during his Factory challenge in Pinsir Me, I Must Be Dreaming, it should not be confused with his Sceptile. This Grovyle, like the other Factory Pokémon, is at level 50.

Trivia

Origin

Bulbanews
Bulbanews has an article related to this subject:
On the Origin of Species: Treecko, Grovyle and Sceptile

Appearance-wise, Grovyle resembles the dinosaur known as the Dromaeosaurus. It is believed that the dinosaur had feathers, much like how Grovyle has leaves on its body - the leaves on its tail are especially similar to the tails of Epidexipteryx, which only had short tails that supported much larger feathers. Its design could be based on a Protarchaeopteryx. Like the other members of its evolutionary line, Grovyle's design shares some similarities with the leaf-tailed gecko, a species of lizard that blends in with plantlike appendages.

Name origin

Grovyle is a combination of grove (a group of trees) and reptileVyle may also possibly refer to vine or vile.

Juptile is based on jungle or 樹 ju (tree) and reptile or raptor.

Volcarona (Japaneseウルガモス Ulgamoth) is a dual-type Bug/Fire Pokémon introduced in Generation V.

It evolves from Larvesta starting at level 59.

Biology

Volcarona is a large, moth-like Pokémon with four small feet. It appears to have compound eyes that are two shades of blue, and there is a red horn-like structure on each side of its face. The fuzz on its upper body is smoky white and tangled. Its abdomen is black in the center and light blue with black dots on the outside. It has six leaf-like wings that are orange in color and have small black spots.

Volcarona releases burning scales from its wings to engulf the battlefield in a sea of fire. Volcarona's flames are said to provide a replacement for the artificial light when the atmosphere is dark with volcanic ash, and some legends claim that it hatched from a cocoon of raging flames to provide light people and Pokémon in freezing climates. It was feared as the "rage of the sun". Volcarona's shrine in Relic Castle remains as a testament to the respect it commanded.

Volcarona is the only known Pokémon capable of learning Fiery Dance.

However, Ashhis friends, and Brycen tried to stop Rizzo from doing so. They had a battle, where Brycen eventually defeated Rizzo's Jellicent with his Beartic, and then freed the Sun Pokémon.

Minor appearances

Volcarona debuted in White—Victini and Zekrom and Black—Victini and Reshiram.

Trivia

  • Volcarona shares its category with Espeon and Sunflora. They are all known as the Sun Pokémon.
    • It also shares its category with Solgaleo in Japanese, as Solgaleo is also known as the Sun Pokémon in that language.
  • Volcarona evolves from its pre-evolved form Larvesta later than any other two-stage evolution family, at Level 59.

Origin

Volcarona is based on a moth, presumably the Atlas moth or cecropia moth. Conceptually, it seems to be derived from the phrase "like a moth to a flame", which refers to the observed positive phototaxis demonstrated by moths. It may also have been inspired by Mothra, a famous Kaiju.

It may be also based on a solar. Its wings may be based on the petals of a tiger lily, having the same number of extensions, black spots, and red-orange coloring. The black spots on its wings may also represent the dark spots on the sun. The head and antennae of Volcarona bear a resemblance to the headpiece of Hathor, which depicts the horns.

Name origin

Volcarona is a combination of volcano and corona, referring to its Fire type and status as the Sun Pokémon. It may also refer to Vulcan, the Roman fake character.

Ulgamoth is a combination of ウルカヌス Urukanusu (Vulcan), 蛾 ga (moth), and moth.
