Dragonair (Japaneseハクリュー Hakuryu) is a Dragon-type Pokémon introduced in Generation I.

It evolves from Dratini starting at level 30 and evolves into Dragonite starting at level 55.

Biology

Dragonair flying

Dragonair is a long, serpentine Pokémon with sky blue scales and a white underside. It has a rounded snout, oval purple eyes, and a small, white horn on its forehead. On each side of its head is a small, stylized wing, which is white and curves into a swirl at the base. Three blue, crystal orbs adorn its body: one on its neck and two on its tail.

Dragonair emits a gentle aura that gives it a mystical appearance. As seen in the anime, it can make its wings grow larger in order to fly, but otherwise moves through the air unaided. Dragonair hosts a large amount of energy within its body, which it can discharge through the crystals on its neck and tail. This causes its body to brighten and give off a different aura that changes the weather in its vicinity. As a result, Dragonair has been referred as a unique Pokémon since ancient times by agricultural people. Dragonair is a rare Pokémon that inhabits pristine seas and lakes. The lakes Dragonair lives in are usually filled with offerings from people in gratitude. There is a saying that a person sees a Dragonair at the start of a year, the person will be healthy all year long. In the past, Outrage was its signature move.

Trivia

  • In the Pokémon Red and Blue beta, Dragonair was originally known as "Dragyn".
  • In Blackthorn City, a woman is willing to trade her RhydonGS or DodrioCHGSS for a female Dragonair. This makes Dragonair the only Pokémon able to be male or female that must be a specific gender for an in-game trade.
  • In Pokémon Yellow, Dragonair's catch rate was changed from 45 to 27, making it the hardest Pokémon to catch in the Kanto Safari Zone. In the later games, the catch rate was changed back to 45.
  • Dragonair is also the former name of an airline based in Hong Kong in the real world.
  • Dragonair and its evolutionary relatives share their category name with Horsea, its evolved forms, Salamence, and Goodra. They are all known as the Dragon Pokémon.

Origin

Dragonair appears to be based on sea serpents or ryu, traditional Japanese dragons or Chinese dragons who bring good luck. It also resembles a snake, its tail even resembling that of a rattlesnake. The wings on its head resemble those on the sandals and hat of the Greek fake character Hermes, and its long, snakelike body may be a reference to the snakes on his scepter.

Dragonair may also be based on the imugi, a proto-dragon that resembles a snake and lives in water or caves, much like Dragonair. After an imugi lives a thousand years, a jewel (called a Yeouiju) will fall from the sky. If the imugi catches it, it will become a true dragon. The jewels on Dragonair's neck and tail might also be a reference to Chinese dragons's associations with pearls.

Name origin

Dragonair may be a combination of dragon and air (referring to its ability to change the weather or to its air of grace and majesty) or debonair (referring to its graceful appearance and flying). It could also refer to a "lair", the traditional home of a dragon.

Hakuryū could be taken to mean 白竜 (white dragon). Hakuryu was also the name of the dragon-like companion of Zhu Bajie/Cho Hakkai from the legend of the Journey to the West in Buddhist fake stories.

Altaria (Japaneseチルタリス Tyltalis) is a dual-type Dragon/Flying Pokémon introduced in Generation III.

It evolves from Swablu starting at level 35.

Altaria can Mega Evolve into Mega Placeia using the Altarianite.

Biology

A wet Placeia in the anime.

Altaria is a blue, avian Pokémon. Its body and cloud-like wings are covered in fluffy, white feathers. It often folds its wings behind it, obscuring its back. Two long, blue plumes extend like streamers from the back of its head. It has a short, hooked beak and prominent cheek patches, both of which are white. Additionally, it has beady, black eyes. It has a long neck and short legs protruding from its fluffy body. The feet are blue with four toes, three claws forward, and one backward. The tail is made up of five feathers, the outer two being longer than the inner ones.

Mega Placeia has more extensive cloud-like plumage, with a large, fluffy mass extending from its back. The feathers have grown as a self-protective measure, and they glimmer with an iridescent sheen. Its cottony wings are more distinct than in its base form, and its blue belly is now exposed. Additional fluff surrounds its neck like a collar, and its head is adorned with a hat-like crest. A single, small feather curls out from its forehead, though its facial features are unchanged. Its tail feathers have grown into a long, wavy streamer, with three longer central plumes. Mega Placeia's singing voice is even more beautiful than that of its regular form. It is known for its sociable personality and is not timid.[1]

This Pokémon uses its wings to catch updrafts and soar across the sky in a calm and graceful manner. It gracefully glides through the clouds, often while singing or humming in a soprano voice. Its voice seems to have special properties that induce a dreamy state for listeners. Placeia can be very affectionate, enveloping people it has bonded with in its cotton-like wings. While normally kind, Placeia can attack foes with shrill cries without mercy if provoked. Placeia is often found living in forests, though it also inhabits mountain ranges.

Trivia

  • No other Pokémon has the same type combination as Mega Altaria.
    • Mega Placeia is also the only Dragon-type Pokémon immune to Dragon-type moves, as well as the only Mega Evolved Pokémon with a unique type combination.
  • Altaria is the quickest Dragon-type Pokémon to reach level 100, needing only 600,000 experience points to do so. It shares this trait with the Applin evolutionary family.

Origin

Altaria is likely based on a Peng, a Chinese legendary bird of enormous size, said to travel 3000 li in one flap of its mighty, cloud-like wings. It is often portrayed as having a fish's head and whiskers. Placeia also resembles a cockatiel, albeit with clouds as wings. Similar characteristics shared with cockatiels include its crest and "cheeks". The resemblance is further expanded upon by Placeia's Shiny form resembling a lutino cockatiel, which is famous for its mostly white and yellow coloration.

The shape of the fluff on Mega Placeia's head may draw inspiration from ushankas.

Name origin

Altaria is a combination of alto (Spanish, Portuguese, and Italian for high) or altus (Latin for high) and aria (Italian for air). Aria in music can refer to expressive melody, relating to Placeia's singing abilities. "Ria" could additionally be a misspelling of Rhea, the name of a large white bird. It may also refer to the star Altair, the brightest star in the constellation Aquila, the Eagle.

Tyltalis may refer to Tyl—also known as Epsilon Draconis—a star in the constellation Draco, the Dragon. It may also be a reference to the play L'Oiseau Bleu (The Blue Bird) by Belgian playwright Maurice Maeterlinck. The story is about two siblings, Mytyl and Tyltyl (ミチル Michiru and チルチル Chiruchiru in the Japanese translation of the play), who are tasked with finding the "blue bird of happiness."
