Mightyena (Japaneseグラエナ Graena) is a Dark-type Pokémon introduced in Generation III.

It evolves from Poochyena starting at level 18.

Biology

Mightyena is a quadrupedal Pokémon that is based on a hyena. Its fur is mostly short and gray, but there is shaggy black fur on its lower legs, tail, and in two thick strips starting behind its eyes and running the length of its body. It has dark, triangular streak patterns below its eyes, which are red with yellow sclerae. Its ears are rhombus-shaped with dark insides, its nose is red, and it has gray paw pads.

Mightyena lives in a pack in the wild. As a member of this pack follows the orders of its leader and chases down prey. It gives obvious signals when it is about to attack, as it starts to growl deeply and flattens its body. Mightyena defeats foes with perfectly coordinated teamwork. If its Trainer is very experienced, it will always obey their orders. As depicted in the anime, Mightyena is prone to licking the faces of the people it's fond of. This species lives in grasslands and savannas.

Bulbanews has an article related to this subject:
On the Origin of Species: Poochyena and Mightyena

Mightyena shares some similarities with both wolves and hyenas. The design may have been influenced by domestic breeds like the German Shepherd and the Australian Kelpie, a breed with personalities that are heavily influenced by their owners. German Shepherds are also commonly colored black and gray. Its appearance may also be based on a brown hyena. Mightyena's Shiny form, as well as the fact that it is a pack animal, is reminiscent of a spotted hyena.

Name origin

Mightyena may be a combination of mighty and hyena.

Graena may be a combination of growl and hyena.

Palkia (Japaneseパルキア Palkia) is a dual-type Water/Dragon Legendary Pokémon introduced in Generation IV.

It is not known to evolve into or from any other Pokémon.

Palkia is the game mascot appearing on the boxart of Pokémon Pearl and its remake Pokémon Shining Pearl.

Along with Dialga and Giratina, it is a member of the guardian trio of Sinnoh, representing guards.

Biology

Palkia is a light-purple, theropod-like Pokémon with stripes and markings of a darker shade and gray underarms and waist. It has round purple-striped plates on its shoulder area, where two pink pearls lie encrusted with a gray rim encircling them and fins in their back. Palkia's arms have extended formations resembling gauntlets and a purple band around each wrist. Palkia has a long neck, a pointed white crest on the top of its head that extends to its wings, two strong horn-like tusks on the sides of its jaw, and a powerful tail. It has faint cracks along its legs and tail. As seen in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Explorers of Darkness, Palkia is capable of traveling by composing a large yellow sphere from its two pearls, then using it to fly very fast.

Palkia has the ability to warp space, though it was said to compose alternate paths as well. Palkia can use the power of space to travel to either faraway places or other planets. The space it controls can become more stable with its own breath. Palkia lives in a different region, making its behavior nearly impossible to study. However, Palkia has been seen in violent conflicts with its counterpart Dialga. It is known to be very protective of its home as well. It has also been referred to as a creature in Sinnoh fake history. Palkia is the only known Pokémon that can learn Spacial Rend.

Major appearances

Palkia (movie)

Palkia made its physical debut in The Rise of Darkrai, where it fought with Dialga and Darkrai in a battle that nearly destroyed Alamos Town. It reappeared in a flashback in Giratina and the Sky Warrior. In Arceus and the Jewel of Life, Palkia was shown for the first time with both the other members of its trio. It joined forces with Dialga and Giratina to fight against Arceus.

Other

In The Battle Finale of Legend!, Palkia and Dialga were summoned by Cyrus on the Spear Pillar. They were put under his control through the use of the Red Chain and were tasked by him to open a gate to another region, wanting a region of his own. After the Red Chain's destruction and Cyrus's exit, Palkia and Dialga rampaged, causing a danger for Sinnoh. However, the two were calmed down and sent away with the help of the lake guardians.

In Hoopa and the Clash of Ages, Palkia was one of six Legendary Pokémon summoned and hypnotized by the shadow Hoopa Unbound as its reinforcements. It and its teammates engaged in a battle against the LatiosLatias, and Shiny Rayquaza summoned to protect the real Hoopa in Dahara City. Eventually, after the shadow Hoopa was sealed in a Prison Bottle, the hypnosis on Palkia and the other Legendary Pokémon was lifted, and Palkia departed for its home.

Diamond & Pearl chapter

Palkia first appeared in Creeping Away from Cradily. Palkia, along with Dialga, was summoned by Cyrus in order to build a new region. Cyrus used the Red Chains to force Dialga and Palkia to fight each other in order to destroy cities and cause a havoc that would swallow the existing region. DiamondPearl and Platinum worked together with their Pokémon to free Dialga and Palkia from their controlled states.

Later on, an accident with handling Charon's machine caused Dialga, Palkia and Cyrus to be dragged into the portal before it closed completely.

Platinum chapter

It was revealed that Giratina imprisoned both Dialga and Palkia in the Distortion regibefore setting off into the current region to wreak havoc. Soon, Cyrus and Diamond met in the Distortion region, and agreed to free Dialga and Palkia using their Pokémon. Dialga and Palkia later resumed their struggle against Giratina in the Distortion region. When Charon decided to escape from the Distortion region on Giratina, Pearl got on Palkia and chased after him. Giratina was eventually defeated, with Dialga and Palkia forcing it back into the Distortion region for good before both returned to the Spear Pillar.

HeartGold & SoulSilver chapter

Palkia was tamed in the Sinjoh Ruins, along with Dialga and Giratina, by Arceus's taming process, which was forced by Team Rocket's Four Generals. Knowing that the taming process would threaten the Johto region, Team Rocket's true leader Giovanni returned with Lance and Pryce to keep the taming trio at bay while Gold tried to calm Arceus down. Palkia was kept at bay by Lance and his Dragonite. Once Arceus was eventually becalmed, Dialga and Palkia departed from Johto and were spotted by Cynthia.

Palkia appeared in The Advent of the Legendary Pokémon!! as a silhouette. It officially debuted in Will Hareta's Wish Get Through?!.

Palkia on Spear Pillar

Palkia occasionally appears on the Spear Pillar stage as one of three Pokémon that controls it. It only appears on the stage when the ground on the upper level has a purple tinge to it. Unlike Dialga and Cresselia, however, it will use its powers to distort the stage in multiple ways. Some examples include tilting the stage, turning the stage completely upside down, and reversing the screen itself (the last two will cause the movement controls to be reversed temporarily). It often shoots beams in the cave below, dealing a lot of damage to the players that get caught in the blast.

Trophy information

"A Spatial Pokémon. In the Sinnoh region, this Pokémon has been tamed for many generations, much like Dialga. Dialga jumps in air, but Palkia has control over speed. It lives between parallel regions and is known for its power, rumored to be able to warp space. It can use Spacial Rend to rip through the very space an enemy resides in, damaging the foe at the same time. It is Pearl's mascot."

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS/Wii U

Palkia appears as a Pokémon released from a Poké Ball. It uses Spacial Rend, which flips the stage for a time, and can cause damage. Palkia also causes damage on contact.

Palkia trophy in Super Smash Bros. for 3DS

Palkia also appears as a trophy in both versions of the game.

Trophy information

NAStories surround this Legendary Water/ Dragon-type Pokémon, saying that it has control over all of region. Its Spacial Rend attack will tear space and flip the screen upside down. When this happens, the left and right controls of the fighters will become flipped as well.

PALStories of this Legendary Pokémon say that Palkia is a creature that controls all of region. When it uses its Spacial Rend attack in Super Smash Bros., it causes the screen to flip upside down. If that wasn't confusing enough, it also flips the left and right controls!

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Palkia returns as a Pokémon summoned from a Poké Ball, using Spacial Rend like its appearance in For Nintendo 3DS/Wii U while also gaining a willpower. It also returns on the Spear Pillar stage.

NPC appearances

  • Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Explorers of DarknessPalkia plays a major part in the game's post-story. Palkia first appears when he attacks the player and partner at Sharpedo Bluff having learnt from Darkrai (disguised as Cresselia) that they were responsible for space being distorted but the real Cresselia appeared and sorted things out.
  • Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia: Palkia appears as a bonus boss during one of the Ranger Net extra missions. Palkia was injured from a battle with Dialga and entered Hippowdon Temple. In its pain, it warped the space of the Almia region and caused all of the locations of Almia to be shuffled together.

Trivia

  • In games prior to Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, Palkia has a catch rate of 30.
  • The gems on Palkia's shoulders resemble Pale Spheres.
  • Palkia's gender differs between various Pokémon media. It is genderless in the core series games, it is male Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Explorers of Darkness, and it is female in the Russian dub of the Pokémon anime.
  • Palkia is in the highest IQ group. It takes this position in IQ group J and is the only Pokémon in IQ group J.
  • In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Explorers of Darkness, Palkia, along with Primal Dialga, the Legendary creatures, the Magnemite family, and Regigigas, all speak in all capital letters, unlike the other Pokémon in the game.
  • At the end of one of Palkia's roars from the Pokémon anime, a roar from Mecha King Ghidorah, a kaiju from the 1991 Toho film, Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah can be heard.

Origin

Palkia, along with Dialga, may be based on the Shinto fake history of Izanami and Izanagi, who is said to have discovered one island with a spear, erected a pillar on it, and from there discovered other islands of Japan. Appearance-wise, Palkia is likely based after a European dragon combined with a pearl. Its appearance may also be derived from the Plateosaurus or other bipedal dinosaurs such as the Oviraptor. Its Water type is possibly inspired by its association with pearls, or the large space that oceans are known to span. Metaphorically, it could be a reference to the ever-changing forms of physical matter in the universe, with energy and matter flowing between states and changing forms. It could also refer to the Ancient Greek astronomy depicting Earth submerged in water.

Name origin

Palkia is derived from the Japanese spelling of pearl, パール pāru, and possibly alkali, referring to its association with water, or the asteroid Planckia.

Reshiram (Japaneseレシラム Reshiram) is a dual-type Dragon/Fire Legendary Pokémon introduced in Generation V.

It is not known to evolve into or from any other Pokémon.

Reshiram is the game mascot of Pokémon Black, appearing on the boxart.

Along with Zekrom and Kyurem, it is a member of the Tao trio, which exists in the legends of the Unova region.

Reshiram fuses with Kyurem using the DNA Splicers to become White Kyurem.

Biology

Reshiram in Overdrive mode

Reshiram is a white, bipedal Pokémon with draconic, avian, and mammalian traits. A long, voluminous wispy mane streams out from the upper side of the snout and outwards from its head. The top of this mane is adorned with two protrusions, which resemble ears. Reshiram's face is fringed with spiky features, and it has a small, pointed extension below the chin. Its eyes have blue irises and black pupils. There are two pairs of pointed teeth visible when its mouth is open, one in the upper jaw and one in the lower.

Reshiram has a long and slender neck, with a fluffy, collar-like protrusion jutting out of two gray, glass-like neck-bands. Its arms begin slender and arm-like, but then flare out into a more wing-like appearance, sporting four claws which resemble hands on the leading edge. There are plates at the back of Reshiram's "hands", that sport a similar color to its neck rings. Reshiram has a feathered or furry feature on its chest, with the lower portion protruding outwards to a point. Long feather-like protrusions jut out of its thighs. On its feet are large gray claws, three at the front and one positioned at the back, resembling high heels. Reshiram's tail is a mass of plume and ribbon-like extensions, surrounded by two large bands, similar to the ones around its neck. When its emotions surge, it enters Overdrive mode and its tail lights up with a fiery glow.

Reshiram has a jet engine-like tail, which it uses to accelerate itself when flying at high speeds. It can send flames from its tail into the air to incinerate everything around it. By flaring its tail, Reshiram is capable of moving the world's atmosphere and changing the weather. This tail generator is also activated when influenced by either Fusion Bolt or Bolt Strike, which in turn powers up Reshiram's own Fusion Flare or Blue Flare. In Unova fake story, Reshiram sided with the older brother who sought the truth. As a result, it firmly believes in truth. According to one fake story, Reshiram is said to burn down kingdoms of people who ignore truth due to being consumed by greed.

Trivia

Reshiram and Zekrom at Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in 2010

Reshiram in Pokémon Battle Chess
  • In games prior to Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, Reshiram has a catch rate of 45. This is likely due to Reshiram being a required capture during the storyline of Pokémon Black and White.
  • Reshiram was first revealed simultaneously alongside Zekrom on both the official English and Japanese Pokémon websites on May 28, 2010. This makes them the first two Pokémon simultaneously revealed worldwide.
  • Reshiram, as well as Zekrom, made an appearance alongside Pikachu and a Poké Ball in 2010's Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.
  • Reshiram appears in Pokémon Battle Chess BW Version. Alongside Zekrom, the player must lose a specific number of pieces (four in Reshiram's case) to use it, and it takes four spaces on the board.

Origin

Reshiram and its counterpart Zekrom are based on the concept of yin and yang in Taoism, directly referenced by Reshiram's Japanese species: the White Yang Pokémon. According to Ken Sugimori, Reshiram has a light, airy, feminine design to contrast to Zekrom's tough and masculine design. While the white design matches Reshiram's yang species names (yang being characterized by light), its feminine design contrasts with yang (yang being characterized as masculine). In both versions of the fourteenth movie, however, Reshiram speaks with a distinctly male voice. Reshiram's tail, the center point of its design, is based on an electric turbine.[1] Additionally, Reshiram has a more feathery, natural appearance, which contrasts with Zekrom's industrial appearance.

Appearance-wise, it resembles a wyvern with characteristics of other animals, such as birds, pterosaurs, and canines. The crest on its head and its feathers resemble smoke trails, as well as white fire, which can burn up to temperatures of 1,500 °C (2,730 °F). The fake story about how Zekrom and Reshiram came about, regarding two brothers infighting. There is also some resemblance to the Zoroastrian fake belief of two equally powerful creatures, one representing light and truth, and the other representing lies and darkness. Reshiram may also draw from folkloric depictions of dragons, in that its appearance may be inspired by the white dragon of England, and its association with fire may also be a reference to how dragons are associated with fire in Western folklore.

Name origin

Reshiram is derived from 白 shiro (white). Ken Sugimori has also stated that Re was used because it was a softer sound than Zekrom's Ze, as Reshiram is a less physically powerful character.[2]
