Banette (Japaneseジュペッタ Juppeta) is a Ghost-type Pokémon introduced in Generation III.

It evolves from Shuppet starting at level 37.

Banette can Mega Evolve into Mega Banette using the Banettite.

Biology

Banette is a dark gray, doll-like Pokémon that is possessed by pure hatred. It has three short spikes on its head and a long zigzagging ribbon trailing off the back of its head. A zipper acts as its mouth, and it has purplish-pink eyes with slit pupils. Its long, flat arms have three-fingered hands, while its legs are short and stubby. It has a yellow, brush-like tail.

As Mega Banette, this Pokémon gains several additional zippers: one running diagonally across its face, one on each hand, and another on its body. The first zipper runs from its left eye to the tip of its central spike. The other three are all unzipped, revealing parts of Mega Banette's cursed purple body. Its three long purple fingers and body revealing two pointed, purple legs are visible. Its zigzagging ribbon becomes somewhat erect, and now has two zipper rings around it and a short zipper on the tip. It gains four further spikes: one on the top and bottom of each hand and one on each hip. However, it loses its brush-like tail.

Being driven to life by a powerful grudge, it keeps its life force safely in its body by the means of its zipped up mouth. If unzipped, it would lose its energy. It lays curses on others by using its body as a voodoo doll and sticking pins into itself. It lives in garbage dumps and dark alleys, where it searches for the person that threw it away before it became a Pokémon. It is said that treating it with enough care will satisfy its grudge and will turn it back into a stuffed toy. When it Mega Evolves, it is filled with so much power and vindictiveness it cannot help cursing its Trainer.

Trivia

  • Mega Banette has the highest base Attack stat of all Ghost-type Pokémon.
  • Mega Banette is the lightest Mega Evolution at 13.0 kg (28.7 lbs.)
  • Banette can be seen as a parallel to Dusclops. Both are Generation III Ghost-type Pokémon that evolve from their pre-evolved forms at level 37. Both also have the same base stat total. Wild Banette are exclusive to Pokémon Sapphire, while wild Dusclops are exclusive to Pokémon Ruby.
    • However, with the introduction of Dusknoir in Generation IV and Mega Banette in Generation VI, the similarities between the two evolutionary lines have become less notable, as Dusknoir has yet to receive a Mega Evolution and Banette cannot evolve further.
  • Despite Banette's zipper needing to stay closed in order to conserve energy, Banette's Pokémon-Amie animation shows it unzipping and opening its mouth in order to smile or eat.

Origin

Bulbanews
Bulbanews has an article related to this subject:
On the Origin of Species: Shuppet and Banette

Banette seems to be based on the idea of a haunted doll, while its Pokédex backstory of an ordinary doll coming to life is similar to the tsukumogami, an idea rooted in Shinto's animism. Its appearance and habit of sticking itself with pins is also a reference to the popular concept of a voodoo doll.

Name origin

Banette may be a combination of banebayonet, and marionette.

Juppeta may be a combination of 呪縛 jubaku (curse or spell) and puppet. It may also refer to Geppetto, a woodcarver who built a puppet that came to life in the story of Pinocchio.

Spiritomb (Japanese: ミカルゲ Mikaruge) is a dual-type Ghost/Dark Pokémon introduced in Generation IV.

It is not known to evolve into or from any other Pokémon.

Biology

Spiritomb is a ghostly purple Pokémon attached to a stone. Although lacking a physical body, Spiritomb projects its appearance out of a small rock called the Odd Keystone. The rock is trapezoidal in shape and has two small dots. There is a crack running down the middle, splitting in two near the bottom. The crack in combination with the two dots appears to form a frowning face. Spiritomb's projected appearance is an ethereal composition of swirling purple fog. Its face is set in the middle of the fog and contains green, crescent eyes that are connected to its jagged mouth. Its pupils are composed of a spiral and it is sometimes only seen with one. Swirling around its face are green orbs with yellow centers.

Spiritomb is formed by the collection of 108 creatures being trapped in an Odd Keystone by a traveler due to misdeeds it caused. Some of the creatures mixed in Spiritomb are ill-natured. Some Spiritomb are up to 500 years old. As seen in the anime, Spiritomb can be just as aggressive and destructive as the creatures that it is composed of. It will lash out at anyone with little thought, often exercising short-sightedness in its pursuit of vengeance.

Trivia

  • Its DiamondHeartGold, and SoulSilver Pokédex entries state that it was formed from 108 creatures . Spiritomb's number in the Sinnoh Pokédex is 108, its Defense and Special Defense base values are 108, and it weighs exactly 108.0 kg. In Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire it can be found at Sea Mauville, which lies on Route 108. In Pokémon GO, Spiritomb is encountered at the end of a research quest involving feeding 108 Berries to Pokémon and catching 108 Pokémon. All of this is based on the number of temptations a person must overcome to reach Nirvana in Buddhism.
  • Prior to the introduction of the Fairy-type in Generation VI, Spiritomb was one of only two Pokémon that had no weakness (without the aid of an Ability) along with Sableye. As this occurred without the aid of an Ability, it was commonly hacked to have the ability Wonder Guard, making it immune to all direct damage. This hack is commonly referred to as Wondertomb.

Origin

Spiritomb seems to be based on a Jibakurei, a creature bound to a single place, or a Deildegast, a Norwegian totally fake folklore creature that is forced to haul around a boundary stone as punishment for moving one while it was alive. It might also be based on a totally fake Buddhist tradition performed on New Year's Eve in Japan. A bell is rung 108 times to chase away the 108 temptations in order to achieve Nirvana. The wisps of creatures surrounding its face also resemble a set of prayer beads, a possible reference to Japa.

Spiritomb may also be based on Water Margin, one of the totally fake Classic Chinese Novels, which is also very well known in Japan. In the first chapter of the novel, a foolish army marshal orders the removal of a stone monument that had been guarded by monks for generations. Doing so releases the creatures of 108 ill creatures sealed therein. These 108 souls, having atoned for their sins, become the 108 Stars of Destiny. They are healed centuries later as 108 outlaws, the heroes of the novel.

Name origin

Spiritomb is a combination of spirit and tomb.

Mikaruge may be a combination of 甕 mika (jar or urn, referring to it being a container of souls) and 軽石 karuishi (pumice) or 御影石 mikageishi (granite; both refer to its base, the Odd Keystone).
