Beedrill (Japaneseスピアー Spear) is a dual-type Bug/Poison Pokémon introduced in Generation I.

It evolves from Kakuna starting at level 10. It is the final form of Weedle.

Beedrill can Mega Evolve into Mega Beedrill using the Beedrillite.

Biology

Beedrill is a Pokémon which mostly resembles a bipedal, yellow wasp; however, it only has four legs instead of six and lacks pigment pits. Beedrill's head is round with a slightly pointed mouth, large, red eyes, and black antennae with a sharp bend in the middle. Its forelegs are tipped with long, conical stingers. It stands on its other two legs, which are long, segmented, and insectoid in shape. Beedrill has two pairs of rounded, veined wings, and another stinger on its yellow-and-black striped abdomen.

Beedrill is highly territorial and unlike real bees, Beedrill live in colonies rather than true "hives", and they work together to solve basic problems regarding food, territory and reproduction. As seen in the anime, Beedrill seems to be especially concerned with the welfare of Weedle and Kakuna and it will respond aggressively to those that disturb them. Disturbing one Beedrill will cause the whole colony to attack. It flies at high speed and attacks using the large venomous stingers on its forelegs and abdomen. The two stingers on its forelimbs allow it to use its former signature moveTwineedle. It will take the victims of its attacks back to its nest for food. Beedrill nests in temperate forests and misty wooded areas.

As Mega Beedrill, it gains more defined features. The antennae are shorter and T-shaped. Its eyes become longer and sleeker. It now has three pairs of wings; the uppermost pair is larger with a black trim along the top. Its stingers become longer and larger, resembling lances. Additional conical, black-and-yellow stingers with white tips take the place of its legs. Its abdomen becomes larger, grooved and is attached to its thorax by a black structure. A similar black structure connects its head and thorax. The stinger on its abdomen is now a pale yellow, and it now has black stripes over its entire body. Fast-acting poison is stored in the stingers on its limbs, while the tail stinger produces a slow-acting poison that is used to finish opponents. The instantaneous poisons are instead used to prevent the foe from fleeing.[1]

Trivia

  • Beedrill's English name was originally going to be spelled Beedril.
  • Beedrill can be seen as a parallel to Butterfree. Both of their unevolved stages evolve into their respective first evolutionary stages at level 7, which then evolve into their respective final forms at level 10. They both also go through metamorphosis-like evolution and share a base stat total of 395. Also, while Beedrill is a version exclusive of Black and Black 2, Butterfree is exclusive to White and White 2.
  • In Pokémon Conquest, Beedrill is the only Pokémon that is featured without its evolutionary relatives.
  • Mega Beedrill was designed by Hitoshi Ariga.[2]
  • Mega Beedrill has the highest Attack and Speed base stats of all Poison-type Pokémon. It also has the lowest Special Attack base stat of all Poison-type and Mega Evolved Pokémon, the lowest Defense of all Mega Evolved Pokémon, and the lowest single base stat of any Mega Evolved Pokémon.
    • Mega Beedrill is the only Mega Evolved Pokémon whose base Special Attack is lower than that of its base form.

Origin

Beedrill seems to be based on a bee or wasp, possibly the Japanese honey beeAsian giant hornet, or yellowjacket. Its pointed arms resemble spears. Its Shiny color scheme is similar to metallic green sweat bees.

Name origin

Beedrill may be a combination of bee and drill.

Spear is the English word spear. When spelled backwards in Japanese, spear (スピア) becomes Apis (アピス), the genus name of the honey bee.

Scizor (Japaneseハッサム Hassam) is a dual-type Bug/Steel Pokémon introduced in Generation II.

It evolves from Scyther when traded holding a Metal Coat.

Scizor can Mega Evolve into Mega Scizor using the Scizorite.

Biology

Scizor's retracted wings

Scizor is a bipedal, insectoid Pokémon with a red, metallic exoskeleton. It has gray, retractable forewings and hind wings with simple, curved venation. Its head is kite-shaped with three blunt horns extending above its forehead, and dark yellow eyes. Scizor's neck and part of its thorax give the appearance of being exposed: they show black skin and are surrounded by its raised exoskeleton. Scizor has a large abdomen with three black, pointed stripes below the waist; the female has a larger abdomen than the male. Scizor has broad shoulders and thin, segmented arms ending in large, round pincers, which make up a third of Scizor's body weight. Scizor's legs are defined by large hip joints, thin thighs, and wide calves, its feet ending in one clawed toe in front and another in the back.

Mega Scizor's pincers lengthen and develop serrations. The lower half of the claws turn white and gain three-pointed spikes on the underside. The barbs on Mega Scizor's claws can stab through concrete, and opponents caught in them are unable to escape.[1] Its eyespots are now blue with a thin black rim. Though they lack the black rim, its eyes are blue as well. Additional pieces of black armoring appear on various areas of its body: a three-pointed crest on its forehead and striated coverings on its shoulders and thighs. Mega Scizor's legs are less detailed and resemble large, tapered spikes with white tips.

Scizor's body is as hard as steel, with claws strong enough to crush any hard object. They can be opened and closed like jaws, and are patterned with black, eyespots with yellow "pupils". Its muscles are said to be made of metal. It will raise its claws and wave them around to scare off predators or foes, giving it the appearance of having three heads. When it identifies an enemy, Scizor will use its claw to beat up the opponent to the point there is nothing but scrap left afterward. Scizor is incapable of flight, instead quickly flapping its wings to regulate its body temperature. It does this to prevent its body from becoming too hot and melting. It has tremendous power despite its slim body. Scizor is rarely found in the wild, though it can be found in grasslands.

While Mega Scizor is formidable, it cannot maintain this form for extended periods of time; after too long, its body starts to melt and it loses the strength to wield its heavy pincers. The reason is due to it being overflown with excess energy from its Mega Evolution, unable to properly regulate its body temperature. Mega Scizor uses its pincers to rip anything it grabs to shreds. It prefers to beat up the opponents instead of grasping them.

Other appearances

Scizor in Pokkén Tournament

Super Smash Bros. Melee

When released from a Poké Ball, Scizor will charge forward while flailing its claws, then leap high into the air and fall off the screen. Its attack pattern is similar to Marill.

Trophy information

This evolved form of Scyther has arms ending in large pincers with distinctive eye-spot markings. It's unable to fly very far with its wings, but it can affect its body temperature by flapping them at high speeds. Its sleek look has made Scizor quite popular among collectors.

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U

Scizor makes a cameo appearance in the Kalos Pokémon League. When the stage transitions to the Ironworks Chamber, it can be seen in the background along with SteelixKlinklang, and Honedge.

Trophy information

NA: Is that a three-headed monster?! No, wait... the left and right heads are actually claws! Creepy. Most creatures that have face-like patterns use them defensively to give themselves a chance to flee. Scizor throws that idea away and uses them to scare foes while it attacks!

PAL: It may look like this Pokémon has three heads, but that's just what it wants you to think. Look closer and you'll see that two of them are actually claws. Most creatures with face-like markings use them to scare predators to give themselves a chance to run away, but Scizor seems more likely to attack while its foe is stunned!

Pokkén Tournament DX

Scizor is a playable character in the arcade and Nintendo Switch versions of Pokkén Tournament.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Scizor in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Scizor returns as a Poké Ball item as it did in Super Smash Bros. Melee. It retains its movement and actions from prior games, using Metal Claw to fly at and slash opponents in its way with great speed. It then jumps off the screen. It also appears as a Spirit.

Trivia

  • Scizor shares its category with Kingler. They are both known as the Pincer Pokémon (though Scizor was known as the Scissors Pokémon in Generation II and has been called the Scissor Pokémon in the anime).
  • Despite having different base stats, Scizor and its pre-evolved form both have a base stat total of 500. In turn, Scizor is the only Pokémon to not have its base stat total changed upon evolving. Scyther is faster, whereas Scizor has higher attack and defense.
  • Mega Scizor is tied with Mega Pinsir, Mega Heracross, and Genesect for the highest base stat total of all Bug-type Pokémon.
  • Scizor can be seen as a parallel to Steelix. They both have pre-evolved forms from Generation I, and both evolve via trading with a Metal Coat in which both change a typing to the Steel type. Both Pokémon also gain a Mega Evolution in Generation VI.

Origin

Scizor shares characteristics with flying red ants and mantises. It also shares characteristics with wasp-mimicking mantidflies.

Name origin

Scizor is a corruption of scissor or a combination of scissors and razor.

Hassam is a corruption of 剪む hasamu (to clip or snip).
