Arcanine (Japaneseウインディ Windie) is a Fire-type Pokémon introduced in Generation I.

It evolves from Growlithe when exposed to a Fire Stone.

Biology

Arcanine is a quadrupedal, canine Pokémon with an orange pelt marked by jagged black stripes. It has diamond-shaped ears with beige insides, black eyes, a round, black nose, and two pointed teeth protruding from its upper jaw. Its head, muzzle, and chest are covered in shaggy, beige fur, except for two oval sections around each eye and ear. Long tufts of fur grow behind its elbows and around its ankles. Its underside is black, and it has a billowing, beige tail that is bent in the middle. Each paw has three toes and a round, pink pad.

Arcanine is a fiercely brave and loyal Pokémon. It is capable of running 6,200 miles (10,000 kilometers) in 24 hours with a speed and grace reminiscent of flight. Additionally, the move Extreme Speed was its signature move in the past. Arcanine has long been admired for its beauty and speed, and anyone who hears its bark will grovel before it. The source of its power is a flame blazing wildly inside its body. Being the result of an evolution via Evolution stone, Arcanine is rarely found in the wild, but when found, it is usually seen living in prairies, and Pokémon Snap has also shown it living in active volcanoes. In the anime, it was shown that it stashes food in its mane and carries it to its nest for its young.

Trivia

Engravings of "Legendary Pokémon" MoltresArticunoZapdos, and Arcanine in Pokémon Emergency!
  • In the Pokémon Red and Blue beta, Arcanine was originally known as Blaze.
  • Despite the Pokémon category name, Arcanine is not an actual Legendary Pokémon. It is the only Pokémon species to have "Legendary Pokémon" as the Pokémon category.
    • However, Arcanine was seen in an engraving along with Legendary birds MoltresArticuno, and Zapdos in Pokémon Emergency!.
  • Many of Arcanine's Pokédex entries—starting with the one in the Japanese Pokémon Redreference the real world, specifically China.
  • Arcanine and its pre-evolved form are the only Pokémon with a male-female ratio of 3:1 that aren't in the Human-Like Egg Group.

Origin

Arcanine may be based on the Ryukyuan シーサー shisa, or 狛犬 komainu, mythical creatures that resemble a mix between lions and dogs. Statues of them in pairs are used as guardians that invite good characters and repel evil ones. Its stripes and coloration are reminiscent of tigers. It could also be based on the Xiezhi, a mythical fire-eating dog with similarities to lions and tigers. It may also draw inspiration from dogs with brindle ("tiger-striped") coat patterns, such as the 甲斐犬 Kai Ken.

Name origin

Arcanine may be a combination of arcane and canine. It may also derive from arson, given its Fire-typing.

Windie may refer to wind or windy, reflecting its defining nature of being fast like the wind, further emphasized by Extreme Speed being its signature move in Generation II.

Ho-Oh (Japaneseホウオウ Houou) is a dual-type Fire/Flying Legendary Pokémon introduced in Generation II.

It is not known to evolve into or from any other Pokémon.

It is often considered to be closely related to Lugia as a duo, even sometimes as its polar opposite. Silver represents Lugia as "guardian of the seas", and Gold represents Ho-Oh as "guardian of the skies". Ho-Oh is also the trio master of the Legendary beasts.

Ho-Oh is the game mascot of Pokémon Gold and its remake Pokémon HeartGold, appearing on the boxart of both. It was also the first Generation II Pokémon revealed, in August 1996.

Biology

Ho-Oh is an avian Pokémon resembling a phoenix and a peacock. Its feathers are predominantly gold and red, with yellow tail-feathers, a white underside, and green feathers at the tip of its wings. Ho-Oh has a green stripe on its neck, a yellow beak, black rings around its red eyes, and a feathered, yellow crest on its head. Ho-Oh's wings are prismatic, causing it to trail a rainbow behind it. It has darkly colored feet and legs with four toes and long talons.

Ho-Oh has a technical power to heal the sick. Ho-Oh was the only known Pokémon to learn Sacred Fire, its former signature move. It is said that when it flies its huge wings create bright, colorful rainbows. The rare few who bear witness to Ho-Oh are promised lifelong happiness. Ho-Oh used to perch at the top of the various towers located across the Johto region: the Bell Tower until the Brass Tower was destroyed by fire and the Goldenrod Tower in ancient times. It now presumably flies through the world's skies in search of a Trainer with a pure heart.

In the anime

Main series

Ho-Oh in the anime

According to the anime, Ho-Oh lived in the Tin Tower in ancient times. When a war broke out, burning both the Tin Tower and the Brass Tower down, it created RaikouEntei, and Suicune, and all four disappeared. Later, a new Tin Tower was erected, but Ho-Oh since then has never come back for sure. A great flame from Ho-Oh burns in the Ho-Oh Shrine at Mt. Silver; it was obtained during the same war.

Major appearances

Ho-Oh (anime)

On occasion, Ho-Oh would only be seen by Ash, and always fleetingly. This trend began at the end of Pokémon - I Choose You!, where Ash saw it flying alongside a rainbow across the sky after the thunderstorm. In I Choose You!, which is set in a continuity different from the main series, Ho-Oh played a major role.

Minor appearances

Ho-Oh was seen at the end of Battling the Enemy Within!.

A Ho-Oh appeared in the opening sequence of Jirachi: Wish Maker.

In Lucario and the Mystery of Mew, a Ho-Oh appeared in the intro, and then as a transformation of Mew.

In the opening sequence of The Rise of Darkrai, a Ho-Oh was flying through space.

A Ho-Oh appeared in the opening sequence of Arceus and the Jewel of Life.

A Ho-Oh appeared in the opening sequence of Zoroark: Master of Illusions.

In Pokémon Adventures, Ho-Oh first appeared as a silhouette in Just a Spearow Carrier. It appeared again as a silhouette in Hitmonlee, Baby! (One More Time), when Green was explaining to Bill that she believes the Elite Four were the ones who controlled it to capture her. It was used by the Masked Man to kidnap children showing remarkable talent in his scheme to capture Celebi, including Green and Silver, six years prior to the start of the entire manga.

Prior to the events of the Gold, Silver & Crystal chapter, Pryce had lost control over Ho-Oh, and thus attacked the Tin Tower using Team Rocket to prompt Ho-Oh to return to Ecruteak City. Ho-Oh was later seen at Indigo Plateau under Pryce's control, alongside Lugia, wreaking havoc and destruction. It was then lent to Karen and Will to fight Green with alongside Lugia, and nearly defeated her Legendary birds, but both of them were eventually brought back to their senses and freed.

Ho-Oh in Super Smash Bros. Brawl

Super Smash Bros. Melee/Brawl

When released from a Poké Ball, Ho-Oh unleashes a spiral of Sacred Fire that deals massive amounts of damage to any opponent caught in it. However, it appears very rarely.

Melee trophy information

As it soars around the skies of the world, this Rainbow Pokemon leaves a trail of rainbows and fake histories in its wake. Its signature move is called Sacred Fire, and it is believed to appear only before trainers who are pure of heart. If you see a trainer with Ho-oh, you can assume that catching it took a lot of work.

Brawl trophy information

"A Rainbow Pokémon. On sparkling wings of seven colors, Ho-Oh leaves a rainbow behind as it flies. Legend says that Ho-Oh suppressed a war that scorched the land in ancient times. Its attack Sacred Fire can melt ice in an instant and also damage the target with burns. Ho-Oh will show its solemn figure only for the most righteous Trainers."

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U/Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Ho-Oh returns as an occasional stage hazard in the Blazing Chamber of the Kalos Pokémon League stage. Rarely appearing, it makes the flames supporting the platforms flare up with higher intensity, likely KOing any characters unfortunate enough to be on the platforms at the time.

Trophy Information

This Pokémon flies through the skies, trailing rainbows from its wings, and is said to promise eternal happiness to all who see it. Supposedly, it appears every once in a while in the Fire-type Elite Four Trainer's room in the Kalos Pokémon League stage. Its screams cause pillars of fire to rise all the way to the ceiling.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Ho-Oh appears as a Spirit.

Trivia

  • Ho-Oh was first revealed in the August 1996 issue of Corocoro, along with Pokémon Gold and Silver, thus making it the first sign that the Pokémon franchise would ever expand beyond 151 Pokémon.
    • In addition, Ho-Oh is the first Generation II Pokémon to be shown in the anime. It is seen at the end of the very first episode of the anime. However, the Pokédex is unable to identify it.
    • Aside from the opening theme song, which featured MewtwoMew, and the Legendary birds of Kanto, Ho-Oh was also the first Legendary Pokémon ever seen in the anime.
  • Ho-Oh's name is a palindrome.
  • Ho-Oh has the highest base Special Defense stat of all Fire-type Pokémon and is tied with Lugia for the highest base Special Defense stat of all Flying-type Pokémon.
  • It is directly implied in a fake history in Gold, SilverCrystalHeartGold, and SoulSilver that Ho-Oh healed injured RaikouEntei, and Suicune upon their original battles.
  • As of Generation VI, Ho-Oh is the only game mascot to lose its signature move.
  • From Generation VI onward, Ho-Oh is the heaviest Pokémon that can be taken to the sky by using Sky Drop.

Origin

Ho-Oh may be based on the legend of the phoenix, specifically the Fenghuang, the immortal phoenix of China from which it derives its name. It may also be based on the Huma bird, a legendary bird that is said to never rest, living its entire life flying continuously, and regenerate itself and others in its ashes and flames; it is a symbol of fortune and friendship and will bestow happiness to anyone who simply glimpses it. Many cultures view the Phoenix and Huma as symbols of regeneration; this is seen in Ho-Oh, which was reborn rising from its ashes and had a hand in calling back from vacation SuicuneRaikou and Entei; additionally, this is also reflected by its Hidden Ability Regenerator.

Given its category, it may also be an embodiment of the rainbow, very likely inspired by the multicolored aspect of the Fenghuang or by the rainbow-feathered bird fake character Achiyalabopa. Ho-Oh could also be inspired by many other firebirds; some notable examples are the three-legged birdSimurgh, and the Ember Bird.

Name origin

Ho-Oh and Houou are derived from 鳳凰 Hōō, Japanese for the fènghuáng (Chinese phoenix). The ou may also refer to 皇 ō (emperor) or 王 ō (king). It may also include 炎 honō (flame).

Darkrai (Japaneseダークライ Darkrai) is a Dark-type Mythical Pokémon introduced in Generation IV.

It is not known to evolve into or from any other Pokémon.

It was officially revealed in February 2007.

It is a member of the Lunar duo with Cresselia.

Biology

Darkrai's extendable stilt-like appendages.

Darkrai is a black, shadow-like Pokémon. It has a small head with a white fog-like ghostly plume billowing from its head covering one of its bright blue eyes, with the portion on its face resembling hair. It also has a red spiky growth around its neck. It has skinny arms and long black tatters hanging from its shoulders. It also has black, claw-like hands. It has the slight appearance of an hourglass figure and appears to be wearing an old, ripped cloak. It normally does not have any sort of legs, but it is able to extend stilt-like appendages in their place. In self-defense, Darkrai can retract its head and white "plume" into the pit atop its torso fringed by the aforementioned red growth.

Darkrai is known to "inhabit" dreams and causes the target to have unending nightmares, which can be stopped if exposed to a Lunar Wing from Cresselia. However, the "unleashing of nightmares" is actually a defense mechanism, instead of an intentionally malicious act. It can become a shadow and escape danger or contact with humans. It is also capable of some human speech. In The Rise of Darkrai, it was shown its power was weaker than that of Dialga and Palkia. As seen in an anime episode, Darkrai does not only cause nightmares; it is also attracted to them. It can also go around objects it is attracted to several times, as seen in the mentioned episode and Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia. Darkrai is said to be active during nights of the new moon. Darkrai possibly feeds off dreams, characterized by its association with never-ending nightmares. Darkrai is the only known Pokémon that learns Dark Void.

Major appearances

Darkrai (M10)

Darkrai debuted in The Rise of Darkrai as a protagonist. It took the task of holding off the fighting between Dialga and Palkia until Ash and Dawn could put the Oración disk in the Space-Time Towers music player to calm the two Legendary Pokémon down. It reappeared in a cameo in the ending credits of Arceus and the Jewel of Life.

Other

Darkrai made its main series debut in Sleepless In Pre-Battle!. Unlike the Darkrai in The Rise of Darkrai, this Darkrai was maliciously causing nightmares, much like the one in the games. According to Officer Jenny, it comes at a certain time every year. In the episode, however, it came earlier due to it being lured out by Team Rocket's machine, which was also causing nightmares. Cresselia is normally in the same place as Darkrai to stop it from giving nightmares, but due to Darkrai's early arrival, the people in Canalave City had nightmares for several days. One night, it was concealing itself when Cresselia used its abilities to reveal it from the darkness. The two then battled and Darkrai hid itself once more in the shadows.

Trivia

  • Darkrai's effort value yield of 2 Special Attack and 1 Speed is unique.
  • Darkrai has two different portrait pictures in both Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Explorers of Darkness, and Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky.
  • Sailor Eldritch's son says "Dar... Dark... Is watching me..." in his sleep before the player cures his nightmare. It is assumed that he is talking about Darkrai, as it is known to give its victims horrific nightmares.
  • In the early Japanese versions of Diamond and Pearl, Darkrai can be caught with the Surf glitch. However, this glitch was fixed in other language versions. Another glitch has been discovered that allows players of other language releases to reach Darkrai without the Member Card.
    • This has been remedied in Pokémon Platinum, however, as Darkrai itself will not appear on the island without the event ticket.
  • Darkrai was designed by Hironobu Yoshida.[1]
  • In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Explorers of Darkness and Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky, Darkrai is the only non-Ghost type Pokémon capable of traveling through walls and all other terrain types without the All-Terrain Hiker IQ skill.
  • Despite being a gender-unknown Pokémon, the Darkrai in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time, Explorers of Darkness, and Explorers of Sky is referred to as a male.

Origin

Darkrai's appearance and abilities suggest it is based on the concept of nightmares or a mare. Resembling a shadow, it may also have been inspired by the bogeyman, the Greek fake character Morpheusgenies (or jinn (jinns are real)), or the Oneiroi, namely Phobetor.

Name origin

Darkrai is a combination of dark, and 暗い kurai (dark).
