Mewtwo (Japaneseミュウツー Mewtwo) is a Psychic-type Legendary Pokémon introduced in Generation I.

While it is not known to evolve into or from any other Pokémon, Mewtwo can Mega Evolve into two different forms:

  • Mega Mewtwo X using Mewtwonite X.
  • Mega Mewtwo Y using Mewtwonite Y.

It is a member of the Mew duo along with Mew.

Biology

Mega Mewtwo X stretching its arm.

Mewtwo is a Pokémon made up by science. It is a bipedal, humanoid Pokémon with some feline features. It is primarily gray with a long, purple tail. On top of its head are two short, blunt horns, and it has purple eyes. A tube extends from the back of its skull to the top of its spine, bypassing its neck. It has a defined chest and shoulders, which resemble a breastplate. The three digits on each hand and foot have spherical tips. Its tail is thick at the base but thins before ending in a small bulb.

Mega Mewtwo X is larger and bulkier than its normal state. The horns on its head are longer and extend from V-shaped ridges on its forehead. Additionally, the horns are now pointed and curve upward. It now has two tubes behind its neck, its eyes are light blue, and it has large, purple growths over its shoulders. Its torso is smooth and small compared to its long, bulky limbs, and a Y-shaped line connects the collar and underbelly. Its forearms and thighs each have two raised ridges and its digits are now longer and thinner. The tail is slightly shorter and stiffer than before and has a curled tip. Its muscles are augmented with psychic power, giving it a grip strength of one ton and the ability to sprint 100 meters in two seconds. When using moves in battle, it is shown to be able to stretch its arms and legs.

In comparison, Mega Mewtwo Y is smaller and lighter, losing its long tail and the tube behind its neck. However, it grows a long, purple appendage with a curled tip from the back of its head that is similar to its previous form's tail. On its head, it has two pointed, backward-curving spikes and a half-ring structure connecting to the base of each and crossing over the top of its head. Its eyes are now red and slightly larger. The digits on its hands and feet are now purple and more bulbous and the middle toe is longer than the others. A bumpy ridge similar to a sternum replaces the breastplate structure on its chest, but this form is still largely smoother than the other two. Despite its size, it has phenomenal mental power and is capable of smashing buildings with a mere thought.

Mewtwo was produced after years of horrific gene splicing and DNA engineering experiments based on Mew. It is said to have the most savage heart among all Pokémon, lack compassion, and strike fear into its enemy with cold, glowing eyes. Because it was engineered to be the ultimate in battle, it can only think of defeating its foes. In the first movie, where it was shown to be capable of levitation, telepathy, and mind control, Mewtwo exemplified these vicious characteristics. However, it was later shown to be caring, protective, and even altruistic. Another Mewtwo in the anime shared its aversion to contact with others but was much less belligerent.

Mewtwo conserves energy by remaining motionless in order to unleash its full power in battle. It is also capable of materializing psychic waves in the form of its signature movePsystrike. Though rarely seen in the wild, it is said to be resting in a dark cave somewhere.

History

According to the scientific logs found in the Pokémon Mansion of Cinnabar Island, Mewtwo was born from a pregnant Mew, found deep in the jungles of Guyana, whose embryo had been tampered with to alter its DNA. It was held and studied in the mansion where a scientist performed horrific gene-splicing experiments that made it vicious and extremely powerful. It eventually broke free of the Mansion, destroying it in the process, and fled. It can be encountered in Cerulean Cave, accessible only after a Trainer has proven his or her skill at the Indigo Plateau.

Playing this stage repeatedly is the fastest way to build a high score, due to the extremely high point output of 50,000,000 points per hit earned by hitting Mewtwo.
  • Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs: Mewtwo is the final boss of the game, battled once under the control of the evil Edward "The Thinker", and again under Purple Eyes. Before this, it is seen charging up in Kasa's laboratory in the Sky Fortress.
  • Pokémon Puzzle League: Mewtwo reveals that it organized the Puzzle League to find a worthy foe and clones Ash's Pokémon. In the Very Hard and Super Hard modes, Mewtwo is the final opponent.
  • Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team and Blue Rescue Team: Mewtwo sleeps in the depths of the Western Cave. His slumber is interrupted by the arrival of Blastoise and Charizard, whom he defeats without an issue. Once the player confronts him at the deepest parts of the cave, it is possible to recruit Mewtwo.
  • Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon: Mewtwo appears, having Mega Evolved into Mega Mewtwo Y in order to telepathically link up the Pokémon of the world together to try and stop the Tree of Life's ascent into space. Like all the other Legendary Pokémon gathered for this effort, Mewtwo is turned into stone when Dark Matter is able to regenerate itself. After Dark Matter's defeat, Mewtwo stays at the Island of Isolation as its lone inhabitant, and can be recruited if it is defeated.

Trivia

Shadow Mewtwo's unique aura
  • One of the Pokémon Mansion journals states Mewtwo's birthday is February 6.
    • The same journal implies Mew was impregnated with the modified clone, just like with real-life cloning. All other depictions show Mewtwo being grown using laboratory equipment.
  • Mewtwo comes before Mew in the Pokédex despite being produced from its modified DNA.
  • Mewtwo was the first Pokémon seen in the English dub, as it appears at the very beginning of the first dub opening.
  • Mewtwo is tied with Mew for the most anime opening appearances of any Legendary Pokémon, with seven in Japan.
  • Mewtwo is depicted on the door of Bill's lighthouse in Mystery at the Lighthouse, despite having only been seen by its owners and Team Rocket at that point in the anime. Similarly, Mewtwo's sprite was depicted as a portrait in Viridian Gym, despite being a public area.
  • The island country of Niue released a one-dollar coin featuring Mewtwo as part of a commemorative promotion for the Pokémon franchise, with Mewtwo on the reverse side and the nation's crest on the obverse.
  • Mewtwo was originally depicted as the only member of its species, being a clone of Mew. In the anime and manga, however, it is implied that multiple Mewtwo have been produced.
  • Mega Mewtwo Y was the first Mega Evolution revealed to the public.
    • It was also the first to appear in the anime, even before Mega Evolution was announced.
    • Prior to the announcement of Mega Evolution, Mega Mewtwo Y was referred to as its 「覚醒した姿」 Awakened Form.[1] This term was also used in the manga adaptation of the movie.
  • Mewtwo's Mega Evolutions are tied with Mega Rayquaza for the highest base stat total of all Pokémon, with 780, excluding non-playable Eternamax Eternatus.
    • Mega Mewtwo X has the highest base Attack of all Pokémon, as well as the highest single base stat and base Special Attack of all Fighting-type Pokémon.
      • Mega Mewtwo X's Attack increase is the largest single stat increase of all Mega Evolutions, at 80 points.
    • Mega Mewtwo Y has the highest base Special Attack of all Pokémon and the highest single base stat of all Psychic-type Pokémon.
      • With a mild nature, perfect IVs, and optimized EVs, a Level 100 Mega Mewtwo Y's stats sum to 2,038: the highest sum of any Pokémon.
  • Mewtwo and Charizard are currently the only Pokémon with two Mega Evolutions.
  • In Pokémon GO, Shadow Mewtwo is the only Shadow Pokémon that has a different aura from the other Shadow Pokémon; instead of purple fire, it is surrounded by an aura resembling its Psychic power. It does not have a unique appearance when purified, however.
  • In Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystalwild Mewtwo are programmed to always be holding a Berserk Gene, but since Mewtwo can't be found in the wild in those games, the item cannot be obtained that way. Even if it could be found in the wild, the item would be consumed immediately, so it still wouldn't be obtainable from Mewtwo.

Origin

Like Mew, Mewtwo has some feline characteristics, but its body structure is much larger as a result of gene splicing. Mewtwo also has some characteristics of a grey alien and a salamander.

Mega Mewtwo Y, much like Mew, has characteristics of a vertebrate embryo.

Name origin

Mewtwo is a combination of Mew (the Pokémon it originated from) and two (indicating that it is a clone). It may also be a play on the word mutant (ミュータント).

Umbreon (Japaneseブラッキー Blacky) is a Dark-type Pokémon introduced in Generation II.

It evolves from Eevee when leveled up with high friendship during the night (in the main series games) or when leveled up with high friendship with a Moon Shard in the Bag (in Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness). It is one of Eevee's final forms, the others being VaporeonJolteonFlareonEspeonLeafeonGlaceon, and Sylveon.

It is a starter Pokémon in Pokémon Colosseum alongside the other Generation II Eeveelution, Espeon.

Biology

Umbreon is a Pokémon which has a sleek, black body with four slender legs and crimson eyes. It has two pairs of pointed teeth (one in the upper jaw and one in the lower jaw) which are visible when its mouth is open. It has long, pointed ears and a bushy tail, each with a yellow band around them. Its forehead and legs have yellow rings on them.

Its yellow markings glow at night or when it is excited, and strike fear into anyone nearby. It hides in the darkness while waiting for its opponents, and its yellow rings glow when it leaps to attack. It is also capable of spraying a poisonous sweat when it gets agitated. This Pokémon is rare in the wild, and is more often found in urban areas under the care of people.

  • Eevee won't evolve into Espeon or Umbreon in Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen due to lack of day and night cycle mechanics.
  • Even if all criteria to evolve Eevee into Umbreon are fulfilled in generations VI and VII, it will evolve into Sylveon if it knows a Fairy-type move and has at least two hearts of Affection or just knows a Fairy-type move in generation VIII. Similarly in generations from IV to VII it will evolve into Leafeon near Moss Rock or Glaceon near Ice Rock regardless of other conditions while getting level up.

Trivia

  • Eevee cannot evolve into Espeon or Umbreon in FireRed and LeafGreen due to the lack of a time system. In order to be obtained and added to the Pokédex in these versions, an Eevee must be traded to Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald Versions, evolved there, and then traded back, or else traded from Pokémon Colosseum or Pokémon XD.
  • According to the Diamond and Pearl Pokédex, Umbreon, Glaceon, and Leafeon have identical footprints.
  • Umbreon is the only non-Psychic-type Pokémon to be able to have the Synchronize Ability.
  • Umbreon is the only Eeveelution that had a unique type combination in its debut generation.
  • Umbreon was designed by Atsuko Nishida.[1]
  • Umbreon is tied with:
    • Mega Gyarados and Hoopa Unbound for the highest base Special Defense of all Dark-type Pokémon.
    • Sylveon for the highest base Special Defense stat of all Eeveelutions.
    • Leafeon for the lowest base Special Attack stat of all Eeveelutions.
  • In the Pokémon of the Year poll held by The Pokémon Company in 2020, Umbreon was voted as both the most popular Generation II Pokémon and the most popular Eeveelution, receiving 67,062 votes. It was also voted as the fifth most popular Pokémon overall.

Origin

Umbreon's origins are uncertain, though it could be based on a black cat, which was considered to be an omen of bad luck (in most Western countries, contrary to Japan's viewpoint in which it is considered lucky) and can be interpreted as the reasoning behind the Dark typing. It can also be possibly based off the folk tales of black dogs, especially those in the English folklore. Its long ears are similar to those of a hare and may originate from the East Asian legends concerning a Moon rabbit.

The rings on Umbreon's body resemble Egyptian lunar markings and jewelry that have been associated with animal sculptures, such as cat statues of the Egyptian fake character Bastet. While Bastet was originally a lioness warrior and the fake character, Greeks occupying ancient Egypt toward the end of its civilization changed her into the fake character of the moon. This change may have drawn some of the inspiration for the Pokémon's lunar theme. Furthering the lunar theme, Metamorphoses is a narrative poem that involves the Roman fake character of the moon, Diana, change into the form of a cat as she flees to Egypt.

Additionally, Umbreon may be inspired by Tezcatlipoca, a central fake character in Aztec fake belief who took the form of a black jaguar that had yellow horizontal bands, and was associated with the night sky.

Name origin

Umbreon may be a combination of umbra (Latin for shadow and ghost, as well as the English word for the moon's silhouette during a solar eclipse) and eon, a shortened form of evolution, the word also meaning an immeasurably long period of time (possibly referring to how long evolution takes naturally). Eon is a suffix all Eevee evolutions share and was Eevee's English prototype name.

Blacky may be a combination of black and lucky, as the black cat in Japan is considered lucky. It may also refer to the color of its coat.

Solgaleo (Japaneseソルガレオ Solgaleo) is a dual-type Psychic/Steel Legendary Pokémon introduced in Generation VII.

It evolves from Cosmoem when leveled up in Pokémon SunUltra Sun, or Sword starting at level 53. It is one of Cosmog's final forms, the other being Lunala.

Along with Lunala, it was initially shown, without a name or any data, in May 2016, but information on it was officially revealed on June 2, 2016.

Solgaleo is a member of the Light trio along with Lunala and Necrozma.

Solgaleo is the game mascot of Pokémon Sun, appearing on the boxart.

Necrozma fuses with Solgaleo using the N-Solarizer to become Dusk Mane Necrozma.

Biology

Artwork of Solgaleo's Radiant Sun phase

Solgaleo is a large, white Pokémon resembling a lion. It has a blunt muzzle with a blue-gray nose and pale blue eyes. The top half of its face is a deep blue area that shows a constantly changing starscape. Four yellow spikes frame Solgaleo's head like a crown and two more pairs of spikes adorn either side of its lower jaw. Each spike separates large tufts of Solgaleo's mane. Solid ridges—red nearest Solgaleo's head and yellow farther away—poke out of each tuft along the middle, except on the tufts on its cheeks and chin, with the topmost part wrapping around the tip of the tuft. Overall, its mane composes the impression of a stylized sun. Around each leg is a dark orange band, and there is a black spot on each foot. It has three black toes on each foot with long yellow claws. At the tip of its tail is a large black spot with a thin yellow rim.

When Solgaleo enters its Radiant Sun phase, its third eye appears on its forehead—a light blue symbol similar to a compass rose—and the starscape turns to streaks of light. The fur on its body glows a pale yellow and all other parts of its body except its nose turn bright yellow.

Known as the "beast that devours the sunlight," Solgaleo has long been honored as an emissary of the sun.[1] It said to live in another region and returns there when its third eye activates. Its body is capable of holding a vast amount of energy and glows when active. The intense light it radiates can make nighttime look like midday. Solgaleo can compose Ultra Wormholes to travel to and from Ultra Space. Along with its counterpart Lunala, it can tame Cosmog, which it is said to be the male evolution of. It can also influence a Rockruff's evolution into Lycanroc's Midday form with solar energy. [2]

Solgaleo is the only known Pokémon capable of learning the move Sunsteel Strike and exclusive Z-Move Searing Sunraze Smash.

Major appearances

Solgaleo (anime)

In Revealing the Stuff of Legend!, Nebby evolved into a Solgaleo while at the Place of the Sunne, during the group's quest to save Lusamine from Ultra Space. After its final evolution, Ash and his classmates typically referred to it by its proper name.

In Full Moon and Many Arms!, Solgaleo was involved in rescuing Lunala and Necrozma from Team Rocket's captivity. Later on, after Necrozma separated from Lunala, it was taken over by Necrozma, becoming Dusk Mane Necrozma. It then opened up an Ultra Wormhole to Poipole's world. Ash tried to follow Solgaleo (now fused with Necrozma), but failed because the Ultra Wormhole closed.

In The Prism of Light and Darkness!, after being pursued by Ash, his classmates, and Lunala, to Poipole's world, Solgaleo was successfully separated from Necrozma after the Ultra Guardians, Naganadel and its Poipole subjects, and all the people and Pokemon of Alola sent their light to Necrozma. However, due to being fused with Necrozma for a long period of time, Solgaleo was completely drained of energy. When Ash and Mallow gave Solgaleo a Sitrus Berry, Solgaleo regained its strength once more. Ash requested its power, and it and Ash performed the Z-Move Searing Sunraze Smash alongside Lunala and Gladion, who were performing the Z-Move Menacing Moonraze Maelstrom.

Trivia

  • In Pokémon Sun and Moon, Solgaleo has a base experience yield of 136.
  • Solgaleo has the highest base HP stat of all Steel-type Pokémon.
  • Solgaleo's Japanese name and its romanization were revealed in a tweet of their trademark on March 22, 2016.
  • Solgaleo's Attack and Special Attack are the reverse of Lunala's.

Origin

Solgaleo is likely based on a lion with a sun motif, a fairly common motif in many Western and Middle Eastern cultures. In particular, Solgaleo might reference the alchemical lion, as well as connected to metals via its Steel type.

Name origin

Solgaleo may be a combination of sol (Latin for sun) and leo (Latin for lion). It may also incorporate Galileo, an Italian astronomer who presented evidence that the Earth rotated around the Sun and advocated Copernican heliocentrism.

Solgaleo's verbal cry in Pokémon Sun, "La-liona", is based on the words  (Hawaiian for sun) and liona (Hawaiian for lion).

Lunala (Japaneseルナアーラ Lunala) is a dual-type Psychic/Ghost Legendary Pokémon introduced in Generation VII.

It evolves from Cosmoem when leveled up in Pokémon MoonUltra Moon, or Shield starting at level 53. It is one of Cosmog's final forms, the other being Solgaleo.

Along with Solgaleo, it was initially shown, without a name or any data, in May 2016, but information on it was officially revealed on June 2, 2016.

Lunala is a member of the Light trio along with Solgaleo and Necrozma.

Lunala is the game mascot of Pokémon Moon, appearing on the boxart.

Necrozma fuses with Lunala using the N-Lunarizer to become Dawn Wings Necrozma.

Biology

Artwork of Lunala's Full Moon phase

Lunala is a large Pokémon resembling a skeletal, legless bat. It has a short snout, dark pink eyes with white centers, and a deep blue area on its upper head that shows a constantly changing starscape. A rigid raised hood wraps around its head in a crescent shape and drapes around its neck as well. The outside of the hood is yellow, while the inner part that curves around Lunala's head is white with deep blue streaks. Its torso resembles a ribcage with a slightly curved spike on each shoulder and three spikes extending from the bottom toward its tail. Its massive wings resemble a bat's wings with the skeleton exposed, except that Lunala's wings have a total of seven "finger bones": four running through each wing, one running along the edge to the outermost tip, and two pointing upwards that may act as claws that are more functional. The four "bones" in Lunala's wings are only visible in segments. The skin of Lunala's wings is an iridescent deep blue and a light blue light source appears to glow from behind its ribcage. A large, pale yellow crescent connects the outermost tip of each wing to the next two inner tips, and the remaining two innermost tips are adorned by yellow, four-pointed stars. The bottom of Lunala's tail is also lined by a yellow crescent with a ridge running up the middle of the tail towards the ribcage.

When Lunala enters its Full Moon phase, its third eye—a light red symbol of an eye—appears on its forehead and the starscape turns to streaks of light. The skin of its wings glows a bright, light blue. It spreads its wings wide so that the yellow parts on each wing are arranged in a circle with the outermost points of the four-pointed stars disappearing in the transformation.

Known as the "beast that calls the moon," Lunala has long been honored as an emissary of the moon. This Pokémon constantly absorbs light to convert into energy and can obscure daylight with darkness. When it spreads its wings to absorb light and glitters, it resembles a beautiful night sky.[1] It is said to live in another region, which it returns to when it opens its third eye. Lunala can open Ultra Wormholes to travel to and from Ultra Space. Lunala and its counterpart, Solgaleo, can tame Cosmog, which it is said to be the female evolution of. It can also influence a Rockruff's evolution into Lycanroc's Midnight form with lunar energy.[2]

Lunala is the only Pokémon capable of learning the move Moongeist Beam and the exclusive Z-Move Menacing Moonraze Maelstrom.

Trivia

  • In Pokémon Sun and Moon, Lunala has a base experience yield of 136.
  • Lunala loses the most weight of any Pokémon after evolution, weighing 879.9 kilograms less than Cosmoem.
  • Lunala is tied with GiratinaDawn Wings Necrozma, and Shadow Rider Calyrex for the highest base stat total of all Ghost-type Pokémon.
  • Lunala's Japanese name and its romanization were revealed in a tweet of their trademark on March 22, 2016.
  • Lunala's Attack and Special Attack are the reverse of Solgaleo's.
  • In Pokémon Journeys: The SeriesZapdos and Lunala share the same cry, as seen in JN040.

Origin

Lunala seems to be based on a bat with a Moon motif. In particular, it might reference the two known Hawaiian bat species, the still living Hawaiian hoary bat and the extinct Synemporion, or the ghost bat.

This may also be a basis for Lunala's auxiliary eye in Full Moon phase.

Name origin

Lunala may be a combination of luna (Latin for moon), ala (Latin for wing), and possibly lunula (which means something crescent-shaped).

Lunala's verbal cry in Pokémon Moon, "Mahina-pea", is based on the words mahina (Hawaiian for moon) and ʻōpeʻapeʻa (Hawaiian for bat). In addition, mahina piha is Hawaiian for full moon.
